By: Bella Melendez
Its crunch time ladies and gents! With finals approaching fast, as well as last minute projects and papers, what you decide to wear for PRSSA’s Spring 2016 Oscars Gala can be the last thing on your mind. That’s why I and Veronica Carrion are here. We will help guide you to dress your best for this Oscars themed Gala. When it comes to finding the perfect dress and wanting to make a lasting impression, can be a frustrating task for the ladies. Let’s say you have finally found the perfect dress, now you might have questions on how to style your hair and fix your makeup. “Should I do the fancy updo or leave my hair down with some curls?”
Deciding between the bold lip and smokey eyeshadow look or going the au naturel can be really difficult especially if you are in a rush to get picture perfect ready. Here are my best tips to help simplify your decisions and make life a little easier. There are several key elements to take into consideration when thinking about hair and makeup. For example what color is the dress, is it a loose dress of a form fitting dress, do I want to make a statement or do I want to go for a more simple look? Some styles to think about are to style your hair in a way that best compliments the outfit you have decided to wear. For example, if you have decided to go for a long dress that may have a high neckline you might want to think about going for an updo that ties in perfectly with the dress. You may want to incorporate some type of braid to make the look more modern and romantic. Depending on how tight you want the braids to be, will determine whether if it’s more romantic or chic. If you want a more romantic and sultry look, incorporate loose braids into your look. If you want to make a statement, try a mohawk with tight braids on the sides of you head for a more daring look. If your dress has a more plunging neckline, try doing finger waves or pin curls and wearing it down so that it gives you that old Hollywood style.
As for makeup there are multiple ways that you can do it if your dress is plain you might want to spice up your look with a bold lip. Try a traditional red lip or if you want to be more daring try a dark, deep red lip. If you decide to do a bold lip, try going light on the eyes to not look like you have too much makeup on. Wearing too much makeup can often hide and take away your natural beauty. If you want to make a statement with your eyes, go for a smokey look. You can do a natural smoky eye using browns and touches of gold or going bold and using dark eye shadows like black. If you do go for smokey eye look, use a nude lip that compliments your skin tone to balance out the darkness on your eyes. Be sure to find a good eyeshadow color to best compliment your eyes if you have green, blue or brown eyes. I find nude shimmers and a small line of pink or purple on the lower lash line best compliments brown eyes. A small touch of green or blue shimmer with metallic colors can best fit colored eyes.
If you want a more Hollywood glam look, then can use a highlighting powder a glow to your skin. Apply the highlighting powder to the sections on your face where the light shines the most, like the tops of your cheekbones, eyebrows and the cupid’s bow which is the top of your upper lip right under your nose. Though, be careful and use it lightly because it is easy to overdo the look.
Another look is an old Hollywood style which pairs a bright red lip with gold eye shadow and dramatic winged eyeliner with long lashes. It is a traditional look you can never go wrong with. Makeup is a one size fits all and it all depends on what kind of look you want from head to toe. Depending on your personal preferences, it can enhance your appearance to fit your outfit style and hair. Hopefully, these suggestions help when thinking about your picture perfect look for gala, and earns you best dressed for the night!

With school coming to an end this semester, it is the usual time to hold the extravagant PRSSA’s Oscars Gala for Spring 2016. Now, have you been so focused on your finals and have no idea what to wear? No worries! I am here to help guide you to finding the best style. Let’s get to the most important part of your look, the dress. If you’re feeling trendy, maybe even a pantsuit!
In fact, if you have procrastinated to the last minute to get something to wear, fear not, you have a plethora of options. From knee-length to floor-length gowns, intricate patterns, lace, strapless, halter neck, two-piece, or even a tailored pantsuit, the options for you are completely endless. Although, you may be easily carried away and slightly overwhelmed when shopping for something to wear for the Gala, keep one thought in mind, “dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman,” - Coco Chanel
Galas are social occasions known for their glamour and style. Men and women are typically dressed in their finest clothes, jewelry and shoes. But since we’re all in college, running to affordable retail stores like Macy’s will be just fine! To start off, there are six different types of gala dress codes; white tie, white tie & decorations, black tie, black tie optional, creative black tie and semiformal. There are so many, I know! But before you start getting confused and wondering what each dress code means, let’s just stick to our Gala’s attire: black tie optional.
At black tie optional galas, women can wear formal evening gowns or dresses, short dressy cocktail dresses or dressy separates. Having a balanced look is also extremely important to keep in mind when putting your attire together. You want to wear a shimmery or glittery metallic dress? Go for it! Just make sure your jewelry stays plain, no excessive diamonds or large statement pieces. Having too much bling can draw others attention away from you and be overwhelming to focus on.
Keep the neck bare and the shoes classic like a strappy sandal matching, or color blocking to match the colors of your dress. The last thing you want is to show up looking like a strobe, glittered from head to toe. For example, you’re wearing a knee-length black dress with pink and red designs. In terms of jewelry, you never want to go heavy. For this look, you could wear classic medium sized ball pearl earrings, elegant pink drop diamond earrings or simple oversized ear cuffs. If you decide to wear large statement piece earrings, maybe skip out on wearing a necklace to keep all eyes on your earrings and the print of your dress. As for rings, sticking to a few stackable thin bands per hand can keep the look polished. But if you’re feeling daring, go ahead, rock out a full sophisticated finger ring, but keep the rest of your hands and wrists bare.
To balance the look, you do not want to wear chunky platform heels or wedges. Pairing the dress with sleek black peep toe ankle strap heels or matching the details of the dress by pulling out your deep pink classic pumps will make you look put together. How about a long dress? Okay, so let’s say you’re wearing a long, dark green and plain strapless dress with blue accents. For jewelry and shoes, wearing a small chain necklace with a pendant or diamond without earrings and a pair of blue stiletto pumps can keep you looking classy as ever. Throw your hair up with a messy fringe or leave it down looking wavy and textured look, then you’re ready to run out the door!
If you’re still sitting there thinking, I still can’t decide what to wear or where to go to inspire your own style, don’t worry; I’ve got you covered! Who is excited to attend PRSSA’s Oscars Gala on May 14th? I’m sure we are all very excited to spend a night among great friends in the heart of Downtown Sacramento. This is a special occasion to celebrate every student’s achievements in PRSSA and graduating from Sacramento State. This is your night and here are some tips to own it with your best look ever! Now, no one really ever likes to put in the time, effort and most important, costs to get all dressed up. Well, women of course love pampering themselves, but what about the men? Men have a slighter advantage to finding a fashion look that is suitable for their needs. In the world of fashion, men can dress themselves with one look and still be handsome plus it their time to get ready is way less than women. However, most men become clueless when it comes to dressing themselves for any special event because they don’t know the best styles to compliment their attractive features by recognizing color, style and fitting outfit.
Anum Aamer, networking director, who has done an excellent job picking out a great venue and passion to hold a special night for all PRSSA members to remember by. Since the theme is Oscars, that means people should dress to impress. In this post, I am going to pull sample looks from the previous Met Gala held in NYC to help men get ideas to what to wear for PRSSA’s Gala.
First things first, how to decide between a suit and a tuxedo. Because both styles have similar physical looks, it can be confusing deciding between the two styles. A suit is one look that can be very versatile from job interview to a special date night. The suit has nice slacks, button-down collared dress shirt, blazer to match the slacks to tie the whole look together and accessories like a belt that is the same color as your shoes. A tuxedo will traditionally have a satin facing lapel, button, pocket trim and a satin side stripe down the trouser leg. When it comes to proper accessories, it is common for long ties and fitting vests to be worn over the button-down dress shirt. Each individual has there own taste in color, pinstripe vs. solid color and cut in trim, but those specifics depend on one’s personal preference. Now, to decide on either a suit or a tuxedo depends on the person. Usually, a tuxedo is more of a formal outfit for prom, weddings and galas. Suits are generally worn during professional lifestyles. Though, a tuxedo makes a fashion forward statement towards celebrating the event of importance in your life.
